What Is Stepping?
Stepping is a percussive, energetic, full body dance genre that originated in the early 1900s in African-American fraternities and sororities. Stepping is characterized by the use of complex rhythms and sounds through stomps and steps, claps and pats, spoken word, and other dance technique, where the body is the main instrument.
The Origins Of Step
Originally, stepping was used as a means of communication for slaves who were deprived of conversation. In the early 1900s, black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities started holding "Greek Sings" and began to add movements such as walking in a circle and clapping hands, which came to be used to celebrate initiations into the world of Greeks. These "Greek Sings" would later become "Greek Shows," changing stepping into the style that many recognize today, as stepping became a way for members of these organizations to pay tribute to their historical Greek letter organizations.
We give a special thank you to the members of the NPHC (also known as the Divine 9) Greek organizations that helped pave the way for stepping to become what it is today.
The NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) fraternities & sororities consist of these nine organizations:

How Does Boss'd Up Step Company Uphold The Tradition Of The Art Form Of Step?
The Boss'd Up Step Company is an outlet for youth and young adults to be able to express themselves in a positive manner. We take the idea of 'moving like a boss' both figuratively and literally, and apply the principles given through step and dance to our everyday lives in order to be successful both on and off the dance floor. We have created a unique curriculum that teaches the art form of step that focuses on step history and technique, ear training, and total body movements. We gladly partner with organizations both locally and across the country to provide access to step and step culture to today's youth and young adults.
The Boss’d Up Step Company teaches the dance style of stepping by implementing an award winning and proven STEAM curriculum, "The S.L.A.B Blueprint - ‘A step-by-step guide on how to Step Like A Boss’", where we teach step and dance technique while facilitating STEAM learning through the use of science, mathematics, multiple genres of dance, and artistic expression.
The "S.L.A.B Blueprint" focuses on three main areas of growth and development in step:
